Rupert Russell is a PhD candidate in sociology at Harvard University. In 2006, he graduated top of his class from Cambridge University, Jesus College, with Triple-Starred First Class BA Honors in the Social and Political Sciences. He was the first student ever to receive this distinction. He is currently in Los Angeles completing his doctoral research on the political economy of the entertainment industry.

He has published political and cultural commentary in The Independent, Dazed and Confused, The Annual Review of Sociology, The Huffington Post and True/Slant.
